Google rolls out Gemini AI across Workspace — Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive all get upgrades

Google shipped a wave of Gemini AI features across its Workspace apps. Docs can now generate fully formatted drafts from information in Gmail, Chat, and Drive. Sheets gets natural-language data analysis. Slides can auto-generate presentations from prompts. Drive search now understands context across files. An audio overview feature in Docs generates podcast-style summaries of documents.

Why it matters

If your organization runs on Google Workspace, your teams now have substantially more AI capability without buying anything new — these features ship to existing licenses. This is Google's most direct answer to Microsoft 365 Copilot. CIOs should evaluate whether to enable these features org-wide or roll them out in phases with usage policies.

What to do

Review which Gemini features are auto-enabled vs opt-in for your Workspace tier. Brief your IT team on the new capabilities so they can field questions. Consider whether you need updated acceptable-use guidelines before staff starts generating documents from cross-app context.
